It's speaking as if the 'murder-suicide' itself were the killer -- like some sort of giant meteor or B movie monster. Of course, that formulation neatly takes the attention off the real killer -- Daddy -- and the fact that we ONCE AGAIN, have an abuser Daddy who took his control freak 'custody battle' to the next step."
